How to send custom packaging to your China supplier

A practical checklist for delivering finished custom boxes to a factory, packer or warehouse in China.

If your product is made in China, you do not always need to ship empty boxes to your own country first. Finished custom packaging can be delivered to your China supplier, packer, warehouse or consolidation point so the product is packed before export.

This works best when your product supplier already handles final packing, or when you use a China warehouse to collect products before shipping.

When this workflow makes sense

Use this option when the product is already in China and the packaging needs to meet it before shipment. It is common for ecommerce sellers who source products from one factory but want better branded packaging than the factory normally provides.

It can help reduce empty-box freight, extra storage and repacking work after import.

What to confirm before production

Before printing the boxes, confirm:

  • Product size and weight
  • Box style, material and finish
  • Whether boxes ship flat or assembled
  • Who will pack the product into the box
  • China delivery address and receiver contact
  • Packing instructions for the product supplier
  • Carton marks, labels or warehouse receiving rules
  • Export deadline and freight route

The most common mistake is approving the box but forgetting the handoff. A good packaging plan should say where the finished boxes go, who receives them and what the supplier should do with them.

Flat boxes vs assembled boxes

Folding cartons, sleeves and many mailer boxes can usually be shipped flat to the China supplier. That saves space before packing.

Rigid boxes, gift boxes and assembled presentation boxes take more carton volume. Ask for packed carton size and gross weight before comparing quotes, because the lowest unit price may not be the lowest delivered cost.

What your supplier needs from you

Your China supplier should receive more than a carton of empty boxes. Give them clear instructions:

Detail Why it matters
Packing direction Prevents products from being placed upside down or backwards
Insert position Keeps bottles, jars, candles or accessories in the right place
Label position Avoids covering artwork, barcodes or legal copy
Units per carton Helps match the final packing list
Photo reference Makes repeated packing easier to check

When to use a separate packing service

Sending boxes to your product supplier is not always enough. Use a separate China-side packing service when:

  • Products come from several suppliers
  • The gift set includes more than one item
  • Inserts, labels or cards need careful placement
  • You want product checks before packing
  • The supplier does not want to handle final retail packaging

Share the box style, size, quantity and destination. Artwork is helpful, but not required for the first estimate. If your project has recycled paper, FSC paper, plastic-free packaging or supplier code requirements, send them before sampling.
