When paper inserts make sense

A plastic tray may be practical when the product needs a repeatable molded cavity, a clear presentation, moisture resistance or fast loading on a packing line. The supplier still needs the real product or an accurate sample to check fit.

For glass, electronics, heavy jars and fragile premium products, protection can matter more than keeping every packaging component in one material family. Compare the tray with molded pulp, corrugated board or another tested alternative rather than changing material without a fit test.

Compare sustainability claims carefully

The US EPA sustainable packaging guidance emphasizes material efficiency and recovery, not one universal material winner. The FTC Green Guides also require environmental claims such as “recyclable” to be qualified when access or conditions are limited.

Ask these practical questions:

  • Can the insert be separated from the outer box?
  • Are coatings, labels or mixed materials attached?
  • Is the material collected where the package will be sold?
  • Does the paper option require extra material to provide the same protection?
